ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The top two prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals organization are headed to Colorado next month to participate in Major League Baseball All-Star Weekend festivities. Pitcher Matthew Liberatore and third baseman Nolan Gorman were selected to the National League's roster for the Futures Game, which features the best prospects playing a seven-inning game.
The pair of 21-year-olds, who are also childhood friends and both drafted in the first round of the 2018 draft, are current teammates with the AAA Memphis Redbirds.
Gorman, the No. 2 prospect for St. Louis and No. 28 in all of baseball, was just promoted to Triple-A this week. He had a hit and walk in his first game Tuesday night. He's hitting .291 with 11 homers and .867 OPS between AA and AAA this year.
Liberatore, the top prospect for St. Louis and No. 27 in baseball, may have a very busy July as he's part of the Team USA roster headed for the Tokyo Olympics in late July. He has a 2-4 record with 37 strikeouts and 4.62 ERA in seven games this year.
With another St. Louis connection, Chicago White Sox third baseman Jake Burger, 25, will be part of the American League team. The CBC grad also played his college ball Missouri State. He's hitting .476 over his last 10 games at Triple-A.
The Future's Game will be played at 2 p.m. CT on July 11. The MLB All-Star Game is on July 12.
The Cardinals have a shot to have two players starting the All-Star Game for the NL. Both Yadier Molina and Nolan Arenado were named finalists in the fan voting competition that will determine the starting lineup for both teams.
Fans have until Thursday to vote for their favorite players.
