Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright wants to be 'bat boy' on Olympic baseball team

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Adam Wainwright is a huge fan of the Olympics. He loves it so much, he says the next time baseball is back in the summer games he'll volunteer to be anything from pitching coach to bat boy just to be part of Team USA.

The 39-year-old St. Louis Cardinals pitcher tweeted about that desire on Sunday saying, "If I have to be the bat boy or the assistant to the assistant pitching coach I will do it. Just want to be able to represent this great country. #USAUSA"

On Tuesday, he clarified what his role on Team USA may actually be, after pitching seven innings, striking out eight and allowing only two runs in the victory.

"I didn't say anything about pitching," Wainwright says. "There's a very, very, very, very high percentage that I'm not going to be pitching in the next Olympics. But I would love to be there in some way, shape or form, whatever that is."

That chance won't come until 2028 at the soonest, as neither baseball nor softball will be part of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. There's also no guarantee yet that the sports will be in the 2028 games in Los Angeles – when Wainwright would be 47-years-old.

Team USA Baseball begins play in this year's Tokyo Olympics on Friday at 5 a.m. CT against Israel.
