ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Nolan Arenado's time as a St. Louis Cardinal certainly feels like it's over following Cardinals President John Mozeliak and Arenado's agent Joel Wolfe making comments regarding a potential trade of Arenado at the Winter Meetings.
But one Cardinals beat writer thinks there still is a possibility Arenado could still remain with the team in 2025.
Derrick Goold, who covers the Cardinals for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was a special guest on Tuesday's edition of 'The Gashouse Gang' with Tom Ackerman and Kevin Wheeler and among the topics they discussed was Arenado and potential trade possibilities.
While the expectation by many is Arenado will be moved by the Cardinals this offseason, Goold thinks there is still a chance Arenado is a member of the Cardinals in 2025.
"Arenado has committed twice to the Cardinals when he has had a chance to get out, a third time he sought specifically a trade to them, this will be a fourth time where he gets to say 'now I want to go because I can get to a better, more appealing spot, I can move up in the standings,'" said Goold on 'The Gashouse Gang'.
"But if he says no, Cardinals love their guys who commit to St. Louis, what does a four-time commitment say about a player?"
Goold says he has asked all the parties involved, with the exception of the teams that are interested in Arenado, if Arenado time with the Cardinals is over. Goold says all of the parties he has talked to have made it clear Arenado has not requested a trade.
"He has not demanded a trade, he is merely open to a trade to get closer to a championship," said Goold. "He wants that, but, and you hear this with Sonny Gray too, he also like elements of what they have with the Cardinals, whether what they found as home, or a clubhouse, the history with the place, a relationship with players, the manager, or all that stuff."
"I think (the Cardinals) are actively looking and they're being public about looking for a trade. Usually that leads to a trade. The last time we saw was with Tyler O' Neill. We knew it was coming with Stephen Piscotty for a vastly different reason, but this one feels a little bit different."
Goold says a scenario where Arenado is as a member of the Cardinals still in 2025 as Spring Training is set to begin is still possible.
"When I asked them if there's a scenario where Arenado is in Jupiter with the team, no one says 'no'. They don't rule that out," said Goold. "Do they have some conversations that will happen before they get there? Absolutely."
