Jason Smith discussed the new "straight seeding" for the 2025-26 College Football Playoffs.
AUDIO:
The latest College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings have been released under the newly adopted straight seeding format, marking a major shift in postseason structure. With the expanded 12-team playoff now in place, teams are seeded 1 through 12 based strictly on the CFP rankings—no automatic byes for conference champions unless they rank among the top four. This change brings a clearer, merit-based approach, rewarding the best overall teams rather than prioritizing conference titles.
The top four seeds receive first-round byes, while seeds 5–12 compete in the opening round at campus sites. This format not only boosts the importance of regular-season performance but also ensures more compelling matchups across the board. Under this structure, teams like Georgia, Michigan, and Oregon find themselves positioned for both strategic rest and home-field advantages.
