As the Black College Football Hall of Fame is set to hold its induction ceremony this Saturday at the College Football Hall of Fame, 92-9 The Game's The Morning Show of John Fricke and inductee Hugh Douglas were joined by three-time Super Bowl champion John Taylor.
Along with Douglas, he and Taylor will be two of the seven former HBCU standouts who are part of the 2019 Class.
While Taylor achieved tremendous success as a member of San Francisco's three Super Bowl championships from 1988 and 1989, and 1994, he's getting close to realizing he's joining history on this weekend.
“Yeah, it’s sunk in, it’s one of those deals where you think it’s a dream, but it’s reality,” Taylor said.
Given his wardrobe issues, Douglas asked him if he had decided on what he might wear.
“Actually, I don’t know what I’ll wear…I’ll let my wife pick it out so if it doesn’t work, I can blame it on her.”
Surrounded by so many great players over his career with the Niners, Taylor relayed to the hosts of what it felt like playing with legends like Jerry Rice and Joe Montana.
“When we were in college, we would check the stats and someone would say, 'Damn, there's a player at Mississippi Valley State who had x-amount of yardage this weekend;' who came from a different system. When I got (to San Francisco), it was like ‘Am I really where I think I'm at?’ And now I’m playing with guys like Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and Roger Craig, and it was hard to believe. I came from Delaware State – a school that was beaten by 105-0 by Portland State - probably the only thing anyone had ever heard about Delaware State at the time. It was a great experience for me.”
Your plaque may start here, but it’ll evidently head to Canton. How does that feel to you? - “I’m honored. Coming from a small school like Delaware State that's what you never would have expected. I’m really truly honored. It's one of those unbelievable moments. There are many guys who I played with and against who are deserving of this honor as well."
