While the Braves aren’t anywhere close to clinching a playoff spot yet they’re still in the driver’s seat to claim the third and final wild card spot, only three games behind the Diamondbacks and Padres for the first and second wild card spots in the National League, and they’re still within striking distance for the top spot in the NL East being only six games behind the Phillies as well. If the Braves do indeed make it to the postseason they will of course still be a threat to go on a run and win the World Series, but earlier today on The Morning Shift Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan discussed if the Braves don’t need to win it all to feel like they ‘salvaged’ the season.
“I’m not going to sit here on August 28th and say the season’s over, they won’t win a World Series, but to call it a lost season, if you get into the playoffs and you make it out of the wild card right and make it to the divisional round I can’t say it’s a lost season. What I would say is it was a season where you salvaged something out of a plethora of injuries that a lot of franchises would not overcome.” Beau Morgan said.
Mike agrees with Beau and doesn’t think it would be a lost season at that point, but he also says after all the injuries the Braves have faced it’s starting to feel like “it’s just not meant to be” for the Braves this year.
After losing arguably your two best players for the season, one of them being the reigning NL MVP, in Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider, and also losing guys like Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies, Sean Murphy, and Michael Harris II for significant time as well, the Braves making it to the NLDS and certainly anything past that should feel like the season was salvaged even though that wasn’t the expectation for the Braves and Braves fans at the beginning of the season.
