On Thursday Andy & Randy talked about what has become a very tight race for the NL East title between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets. After the Braves tied the Mets for the division lead heading into Wednesday’s games the Mets swept their double-header against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Braves beat the Oakland A’s meaning the Mets currently have a 0.5 game lead in the division with both teams off on Thursday.
Andy & Randy spoke about how Mets fans are going through a tough time right now because the Braves have had control of this division for such a long time prior to this season and that the Mets had a 10.5 game lead in the NL East earlier this season only to see it whiter away.
“Part of its all the history with the Mets and everything right? But is the other part of it maybe because they do have an older team? Their pitchers are older guys, their window is a lot-lot smaller than the Braves window is so they are looking at this like well hell if we can’t do it this year,” said Andy & Randy’s producer Brian Gebhardt.
“The Mets offense was getting by on a song and a prayer the entire season. You are not going to Ichiro (Suzuki) your way to a championship.
You’re just not going to hit infield singles all season long and sac fly guys in. You are going to have to hit a homerun eventually. You are right about their pitching staff too and that’s got kill them. It’s got eat in a way on the inside at night when they are trying to go to sleep,” replied Andy.
“Braves are all like 24. They’re not going anywhere. They’re just this good now and they will be this good next year and they were this good last year. They won 14 in a row in the 90’s and early 2000’s. They’ve just been your boogeyman for 30 years. Chipper Jones named his son after your damn stadium because he owned it. And you guys are going to win 100 games and not win the division?” Andy added.
The Braves and Mets are both back in action on Friday.
You can hear Andy & Randy Monday-Friday from 11a-2p.
