When Spencer Strider began the year in the bullpen and Michael Harris started the season out in the minors it seemed unlikely that the Braves would put forth a true NL Rookie of the Year candidate. Now it seems they may be running away with the award.
But not everybody sees it that way.
Vegas Insider released their updated NL Rookie of the Year odds and while Harris is a favorite at +375, he isn't alone, he's the co-favorite alongside Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz.
Strider is next in line with his odds currently sitting at +450. But after his 12-strikeout performance Thursday night those may change when the odds are updated next.
Despite the effort, Strider does still have a ways to go to catch Harris, and apparently Cruz. But this seems to be Harris' award to lose despite the betting odds.
While Cruz is a strong defender, he certainly isn't providing the Gold Glove-caliber defense that Harris is playing in centerfield. And while he is displaying more power than Harris (4 HR to 6 HR but in half the at-bats), he is currently hitting .219 while Harris is batting .290.
Harris has shown a much better eye at the plate and more speed on the bases and even has a better slugging percentage than the Pirates top prospect.
While Vegas may see things one way, it appears that unless Harris goes into an extended drought, he will be running away with the prestigious award.
The Braves are certainly no stranger to the Rookie of the Year Award as previous winners include Ronald Acuña Jr (2018), Craig Kimbrel (2011), and Rafael Furcal (2000).
