The Atlanta Braves placed catcher Travis d'Arnaud on the 60-day IL on Sunday with a torn ligament in his left thumb.

The move comes after d'Arnaud injured his left thumb in the sixth inning on a tag play at the plate on Saturday. He's scheduled to have surgery in the next few days.

Backup catcher Alex Jackson was also placed on the 10-day IL due to a strained hamstring.

Manager Brian Snitker is optimistic d'Arnaud will return before the season ends, but with the rash of injuries at the position, does general manager Alex Anthopoulos need to make a move?

"I don't think they will," 92.9 The Game Braves' reporter Joe Patrick told the Midday Show. "I think that if they make a move, it's going to be in the bullpen or in the rotation. I don't see them making moves at the catching position but I do think that they are confident in these players.

"I at least think that it's--they see some silver lining in the fact that they are going to allow a guy like William Contreras to get his feet wet and play every single--not even get his feet wet--just dive in."

The Braves called up their top catching prospect, Contreras, who made his first start for the big club on Sunday against the Blue Jays.

"I don't see them making a move right now...I would be surprised if they make a move for a catcher because they've got pieces in place."
