The Atlanta Braves lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the NLCS Sunday night after being up 3-1 in the series. It was a gut-wrenching loss for the Braves and for fans.
Closer Mark Melancon took to Twitter on Monday to both thank and apologize to Atlanta fans.
In what Melancon called "the strangest year of his career," he apologized for the Braves not taking care of business and gave some heartfelt praise to to fans and teammates.
"I'm sorry we weren't able to accomplish our goal and bring you a championship," Melancon said on Twitter. "Whan I was traded to Atlanta I had been just coming off some rough patches physically -- setbacks I had never experienced before. The organization, my teammates, the fans -- you all believed in me."
Melancon saved 11 games for the Braves during the regular season and compiled a 2.78 ERA in 23 games. He also saved two games and didn't allow an earned run in 6 1/3 postseason innings.
Also in his tweet, Melancon gushed about being part of "a truly special team" and added his vote for NL MVP, stating he played "with the 2020 MVP" in Freddie Freeman.
Melancon is set to be a free agent in 2021. Time will tell if his experience with this Braves team, and it's fan base, will push him to re-sign with Atlanta.
