Max Fried heads to 15-day IL; Bryce Elder returns to Braves rotation

When Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried was forced to exit his Opening Day start with a hamstring injury it was expected that he would eventually be placed on the injured list. Earlier Tuesday the Braves made that move official and announced their corresponding moves.

Bryce Elder will to slide into the rotation on Wednesday as he is scheduled to pitch the series finale against Miles Mikolas and the St. Louis Cardinals in a getaway day-game that will start at 1:15 p.m.

After being optioned to Triple A Gwinnett, Elder has made one start, going 6 innings while allowing four runs on five hits against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp last Friday.

Elder seemed to always be the most likely candidate because he could join the Braves rotation on regular rest and start when Fried's turn in the rotation came up.

Bryce Elder was 2-4 in nine starts for the Braves last season, but was much better than those numbers would suggest in his second stint in the rotation (5 starts) in August and September.
