While it is way too early to declare who the 2025 Cy Young winner will be, oddsmakers have Atlanta Braves right-hand pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach quickly becoming a favorite to win the end-of-the-season award.
On Tuesday, while previewing the Braves matchup with the Phillies, Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden shared some thoughts on Schwellenbach opening the season as with +2500 odds to win the Cy Young Award.
Tuesday morning the Braves pitcher moved up to +900 odds.
“That was fast,” Shapiro said in response to Golden sharing the odds movement on Schwellenbach, noting how well the right-hander has performed in his first two outings.
Schwellenback has allowed just three hits, no runs, and struck out 14 batters through 14 innings and currently sits atop Statcast's Pitching Runs Allowed leaderboard, a metric that measures a pitcher's ability to prevent runs.
“If you look at the other night and you look at his stuff, boy do we need him,” Shapiro said in regard to how important Schwellenbach is to the Braves starting rotation as they have gotten off to an 1-8 start to the season.
