If Spencer Strider has a sub three ERA, 300 plus strikeouts, and 20 plus wins he will win the NL Cy Young award this season. Earlier today, our very own Atlanta Braves insider and reporter, Grant McAuley, joined the Morning Shift and explained why those numbers would give Strider the award with little to no competition.
“I mean his only real competition at that point would be what does Zac Gallen’s numbers look like at the end of the year, for me I can’t think of anybody else, and Zac Gallen is not gonna get to 300 strikeouts either, and that’s not a knock on him he’s a great strikeout pitcher, but I just don’t foresee anybody stepping into the Cy Young race that could take away you know if you’ve got an ERA around three or below, 300 strikeouts, and 20 wins” McAuley said.
Grant finishes by saying “I mean those are pretty traditional numbers and you know while all of that is just kind of gone to the background for some of the advanced metrics and things you don’t need all of that to look at Spencer Strider and figure out if he was the best pitcher in the National League for the 2023 season if he accomplishes those things.”
According to BetMGM, Strider currently has +400 odds to win the NL Cy Young, and ranks second in the MLB’s Pitcher Power Rankings. Spencer is well on his way to 300 strikeouts, 20 wins, and if he pitches the second half of the season the way he ended the first half of the season he will get his current 3.44 ERA below three, and he will undoubtedly be the 2023 NL Cy Young winner.
