Are Falcons still on quest for a true No. 2 WR?
Explosive offense ahead, yet a missing piece? Evaluating the Atlanta Falcons' search for a number two Wide Receiver
The Atlanta Falcons' offense is shaping up to be explosive this season with the return of Kyle Pitts from injury, the anticipated contributions from rookie running back Bijan Robinson, and Drake London continuing to grow his game. However, there's a question lingering about whether the team lacks a true No. 2 wide receiver.
John Fricke ponders this, acknowledging the potential of London, Pitts, and the rookie running back Robinson as evidence of a high-powered offense. London's impressive play and the strength of the running game helped keep the offense going last season when Pitts suffered a knee injury, and Robinson joined one of the NFL's top rushing teams.
Nevertheless, the Falcons have seen the departures of Olamide Zaccheaus and Christian Blake to free agency, as well as the trade of Calvin Ridley, who was set to become the No. 1 receiver after Julio Jones' departure, to the Jacksonville Jaguars due to a league suspension. In response, the team has brought in new faces like Scotty Miller from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Mack Hollins from the Las Vegas Raiders to boost depth and leadership in the wide receiver room. However, neither of these players has been a true WR2 for a team before, making it somewhat of a gamble for the Falcons.
On a positive note, the signing of tight end Jonnu Smith, previously with the New England Patriots, may allow Pitts to be utilized more as a receiver, serving as a counterpart to London's role as the No. 1 receiver.
The Falcons' journey starts now, with veteran players joining the rookies in camp on Tuesday, July 25, and the first open practice scheduled for Thursday, July 27. Excitement and anticipation surround the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
