Assessing Atlanta Falcons' offensive line heading into training camp

Evaluating the Atlanta Falcons' Offensive Line as NFL Training Camp approaching

With NFL training camp on the horizon, discussions about the Atlanta Falcons' roster and positions of interest are gaining momentum. One area of focus is the offensive line, particularly with second-round draft picks Jaylen Mayfield and Matthew Bergeron in the mix. D. Orlando Ledbetter, a Football Writer for the AJC, joined The Jon Chuckery Show to shed light on the state of the offensive line heading into training camp.

Chuckery inquired about the plan for second-round pick Matthew Bergeron, and Ledbetter indicated that the team intends to bring him along slowly. The Falcons want Bergeron to transition from tackle to guard, considering the unsuccessful conversion of last year's second-round draft pick, Jaylen Mayfield. Ledbetter mentioned that the team has the luxury of starting Matt Hennessy until they feel confident in Bergeron taking over the role.

Regarding Jaylen Mayfield's chances of making the roster, Ledbetter explained that from a purely football perspective, Mayfield probably wouldn't make the team this year. However, he acknowledged that front offices and coaches often find it challenging to part ways with players they drafted. As a result, Mayfield might make the team but not necessarily the 53-man game day roster.

Ledbetter also addressed the likelihood of center Drew Dalman starting and the Falcons finally finding confidence and consistency at that position. He stated that Dalman is the preferred choice of the coaches and highlighted his technical skills as a center. Whether people view this as the right direction will depend on the level of trust they have in the coaching staff.

The Atlanta Falcons will start training camp for rookies on July 18th, with veterans reporting on July 25th at Flowery Branch. Fans can stay tuned to 92.9 The Game for the latest Atlanta Falcons news and training camp coverage on Audacy.com or the Audacy app.
