In a shocking move just 10 days before the start of the NFL season, the Falcons waived running back Qadree Ollison and added Wayne Gallman.
Ollison, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 draft by the previous regime, never quite showed the ability and rhythm the new staff was looking for this preseason.
Ollison racked up just 23 carries in his two seasons with the Falcons but was in line to get a chance as the primary backup to Mike Davis.
Now, a position group that already had some very serious depth questions get thrust even further under the microscope.
Atlanta Falcons digital reported Scott Bair joined Thomas Mott and Hugh Douglas on Friday morning with further details on the personnel decision and how it came to be.

"As we learn more about this new regime, about what Terry Fontenot and Arthur Smith want to do, if they see any chance of even a minor upgrade they're going to take advantage of it," says Bair. "More than anything else, it's about comparing Gallman to what Ollison was doing and last year he had a good track record of stepping in playing well after Saquon Barkely went down. Are the Falcons 1% better this way, possibly, so you give it a shot."
Gallman was drafted by the Giants in the fourth round of the 2017 draft and rushed for 682 yards last season with the Giants filling in after Saquon Barkley went out injured.
Gallman, who was a teammate of Grady Jarrett's at Clemson in 2013 and 2014 and is a Loganville native, was with the 49ers this preseason.
In addition to Davis and Gallman, the Falcons also have Cordarrelle Patterson on the 53- man roster and RB's D'Onta Foreman and Caleb Huntley on the practice squad.
