“Yes please!” That was the response from both Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden on Wednesday as they reacted to reports from NFL Insider, Josina Anderson in which she stated on Twitter the Atlanta Falcons have been receiving calls in regards to a trade for Kirk Cousins with a third round pick possibly received in return.
“Are you serious, a third round pick this year? We’re going to be stuck the money anyway,” Shapiro said noting his initial thoughts have been the Falcons would more than likely receive a fifth or sixth round pick in exchange for Cousins. As it currently stands, the veteran quarterback is officially in the second year of a 4-year, $180 million contract, with his $10 million roster bonus being triggered last week once the new league year deadline passed.
And while the Falcons will more than likely be on the hook financially for up to $37.5 million even with moving Cousins, Shapiro explained why he believes desperation for a quarterback still makes Cousins a viable option and worth giving up a pick higher than he anticipates.
“He’s got enough game tape on last year, he’s got that Achilles angle to say I’m way more recovered, he’s got the doctors to tell you the second year off the injury is totally different and we know if you don’t have a quarterback, you have nothing,” Shapiro said as he shared his thoughts on how the Falcons could very well end up with high draft capitol for Cousins.
