With first place in the NFC South being on the line in Tampa Bay on Sunday there’s no doubt that it’s a big game for the Falcons, but earlier today The Morning Shift explained why calling Sunday’s game a “must win” is too much.
“It’s an away game, it’s against a good team. I'm not going to put this as a must win game. You have goals out there you want to get those, but I think when you say it’s a must win game that when you don’t win you’re like welp season’s over.” Mike Johnson said.
Mike finished his point by saying “I have a hard time giving a must win game in week seven on a road game. I just have a hard time with that. Like I said, they need it, they need but a must win is just one step too far.”
Beau Morgan builds upon Mike’s point by talking about how labeling games a must win that aren’t really must win games usually leads to overreaction saying “I think that leads in to the overreaction of when things don’t go your way”.
Beau finishes his thought by saying “If you don’t have it, yeah it puts you behind it doesn’t mean you can’t make that ground up”.
Obviously the Falcons want to win every game, they’re going to treat every game like a must win game, and this game being a division game that will decide who will hold first place in the NFC South for the time being makes the game even bigger.
However, there will be 10 regular season games left after the Falcons play the Buccaneers on Sunday, including a game against the Buccaneers in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The Falcons can still win the NFC South if they lose on Sunday, the Falcons can still make the playoffs if they lose on Sunday. The Falcons’ season won’t be over if they lose on Sunday, therefore Sunday is not a must win game for the Falcons.
