The Atlanta Falcons are going to be aggressive in acquiring their future franchise quarterback. Could they trade up in the draft with the trio of teams that also need to find a quarterback? They certainly could, at least according to Peter King. In his goodbye FMIA column, he claimed the Falcons could be interested in making a splashy move up to the third pick to get either Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.
The Steakhouse discussed the potential of this move and whether they'd be on board with this -- or what they could do if it's too expensive.
"Yeah," Steak succinctly stated about being interested in trading up in the draft. "That's the kind of bold move that, if you believe in Jayden Daniels [or Drake Maye], you're going to have to make."
The Falcons cannot afford to miss on the quarterback position this offseason. Many believe that this could be a playoff-caliber roster as soon as next season, but they are set to have their fourth week-one starter in as many years.
If they end up becoming enamored with one of the top prospects, then they'll go get him. If they don't, they could still opt to acquire a veteran to fill the void as a stop-gap option.
"[Maybe] they don't look at Justin Fields as a guy they want to be spending hundreds of millions of dollars on over the next five years," Shapiro said about Fields. "My gut is that Raheem [Morris] and Terry Fontenot, that's not the quarterback they're looking for. They want a drop-back passer that is not relying on his legs quite as much."
So if they end up being unable to afford a trade up into the top three of the NFL Draft and aren't interested in a guy like Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, what's next?
"With a quarterback class this deep, do you sit tight and go get a pass rusher at eight, maybe the second round you talk about the Bo Nix and Michael Penix's of the world, which could happen, or JJ McCarthy," Steak said. "They may not make it out of the first round, but it's going to be fascinating to see if they hitch their wagon to a Russell Wilson."
Atlanta is tasked with getting this decision right, but fortunately they do have some options.
