News broke over the weekend that Justin Fields is heading to Pittsburgh to presumably back up Russell Wilson. The bigger news is that Fields was traded for a 2025 sixth-round pick that could turn into a fourth-round pick based on playing time. The NFL world was shocked at the sticker price (or lack thereof) for a quarterback once presumed to be worth at least a second-round pick.
The Falcons ultimately decided not to pursue Fields and instead sign Kirk Cousins to a deal worth $100 million guaranteed. The argument could be made that because Fields was so cheap it would have been the more prudent move for the team to make, or even attempt to bring him in as well.
Ultimately, the Falcons decided the veteran presence and proven commodity that is Cousins made him the more worthwhile signing.
Fields and Cousins will be inextricably linked because of the way the two divided the fanbase over who would be the right move for the franchise. Now that we know what the low asking price was for Fields, that link grows even stronger.
