The Atlanta Falcons have benched right handed quarterback Kirk Cousins for left handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and now national media, local media, talking heads, and Falcons fans are wondering if that will affect the Falcons’ offensive line at all, and there have even been some people questioning and wondering if Left Tackle Jake Matthews and Right Tackle Kaleb McGary should switch positions now.
Well, earlier today on The Morning Shift former Falcons offensive lineman Mike Johnson explained why nothing needs to or will change with the offensive line now that lefty Michael Penix Jr. is the starting quarterback.
“This irritates me because I've been this guy before, it’s like asking Trae Young to shoot left handed from now on, like you don’t ask a boxer all of sudden to go strictly south paw during the fight after he’s been training right handed for months and months and months.” Johnson said.
Mike also points out that Jake Matthews and Kaleb McGary have taken well north of 5,000 snaps at their respective positions just this season alone, and that there is no chance they’ll ever switch, and describes the people who think a move like that is necessary as an “idiocracy”.
The offensive line and wide receivers will be just fine switching from a right handed quarterback to a left handed quarterback and the offensive line especially because of Penix’s added mobility, so if you want take it from anybody take it from a former NFL offensive lineman that the transition from Kirk Cousins to Michael Penix Jr. won’t be that big of a deal for the Falcons’ offensive line.
