Todd McClure: "Falcons OC hire more important than Head Coach hire"

For obvious reasons there has been a lot of focus on who Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons are going to hire to be their next Head Coach, but earlier today former Falcons Center, who is now in the Falcons Ring of Honor, and Matt Ryan’s former teammate Todd McClure joined The Morning Shift and explained why he thinks the Offensive Coordinator hire is more important than the Head Coach hire.

“I think the Offensive Coordinator hire is more important than the Head Coach hire for this team, and I say that because if you look at it I think [Jeff] Ulbrich has done a great job, he’s got a lot of talent, and you put that defense in that same system, you know of course you gotta sign a couple guys back that are up, that are free agents, but don’t touch that, let that go, and then you have to go find an offensive coordinator in my opinion that fits Bijan Robinson, you know because he’s one of the best players in football, and I think you’re built that way.” McClure said

The former Falcons O-Lineman finished his thought by saying “If your head coach can bring in an offensive coordinator then you can take that dictator guy that runs the whole program, but if not if he doesn’t have that offensive coordinator to come in then you need to go get that guy that has the offensive mind to come in and run this program, and I think that’s where we need to go.”

His other former teammate Mike Johnson, who now is a co-host on The Morning Shift, also believes the Falcons route to sustained success is bringing in a Head Coach like Klint Kubiak who is a creative offensive mind that has a scheme that already fits well with the players on the Falcons roster, who will call plays, and will be able to give the Falcons a long term offensive scheme an identity.

If Mike and Todd’s former quarterback who is now the Falcons President of Football feels the same way then a guy like Klint Kubiak, who Atlanta has interviewed, could end up being the next Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
