As the franchise tag deadline has come and gone the Falcons didn’t tag Kaleb McGary, Dukes & Bell talked about why the team didn’t use the tag on the former first round draft pick and what’s next for the team at right tackle.
Carl talked about whether it was right decision to not tag McGary.
“Why is it the right decision? Because there are just a couple of guys on every team that are worth paying,” Dukes said. “Kaleb McGary as good as he was last season, in my opinion, was not and had not become one of those guys. Okay. You did this with Jake Matthews. Look at our team, you did it with Grady Jarrett, there's always a couple of guys that you go, he's worth it, he's consistent, he shows up, he's healthy, he's gonna be there and you take care of those guys and you have to be selective in the guys that you do that with.”
Dukes talked about what this mean for Falcons future at right tackle.
“But if we were to franchise tag, Kaleb McGary again, you were talking about $17, $18 million for his position and I just, well, yeah, if you didn't reach a long term deal, but I'm just talking about for next season. I did not think it was worth that, and obviously the Falcons didn't either. So we move on and I think you addressed this in the draft, because if you didn't pay McGary, you're not paying any of these free agent tackles to come in.”
