Without a pass rush, Falcons must blitz more

The Atlanta Falcons are 1-6 on the season and the only thing worse than their win-loss record has been the pressure created on the opposing teams QB by the defensive line.

The Falcons have 10 sacks on the season, tied for 24th on the season. But the numbers are even worse than that.

In the loss to the Lions, the Falcons had two sacks, one from a defensive back and one from a linebacker. Both sacks came from a blitz.

With Grady Jarrett being double-teamed on every play and your starting DE combo (Fowler and McKinley) unable to beat their blockers, the Falcons' staff needs to get more creative if they want to affect the opposing QB.

Former NFL DL Chuck Smith, who runs a pass-rush academy, joined John and Hugh and explained why the Falcons need to be blitzing more.

"You gotta get more creative, start sending five, sometimes six, and playing zone in the back end," suggests Smith. "You gotta start sending pressures, get Grady some freedom, and Deion Jones is a fast missile-type of guy that would be a great blitzer."
