Trae Young and the Hawks came into Madison Square Garden and bounced the Knicks from the NBA Cup, as New York’s run in the new in-season tournament ends in the quarterfinals for a second straight season.
Young, who finished with … points and … assists, dribbled the ball in place at halfcourt and pretended to roll dice on the Knicks logo, celebrating a trip to Vegas for the NBA Cup semifinals against the Bucks.
It was on the same Garden floor three years ago that Young took a bow after eliminating the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs, and Boomer says Wednesday night was a continuation of the MSG villain owning the Knicks.
“I hope the Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart podcast comes out and talks about how they’re owned by him,” Boomer said.
“He owns them.”
Nearly the entire Knicks roster is different from when Young beat New York in that first-round playoff series, and in the years since, the Knicks had gotten revenge on the point guard for the most part. But this season, Young has beaten New York twice, first telling traveling Knicks fans to “take y’all asses home” after beating them in Atlanta, and now playing an imaginary game of cee lo on the floor of the World’s Most Famous Arena. Many names have changed since 2021, but Boomer says Young still makes a habit out of frustrating the Knicks and their fans.
“This reminded me of when they beat us in the playoffs before those guys got here,” Boomer said. “It was like when the Devils beat the Rangers a week ago and it felt like the playoffs in 2023 all over again.”
