Nate McMillan's extended interview may eventually lead to his hiring… after the season

Hawks GM Travis Schlenk explains the timeline for a review and decision

The Atlanta Hawks have clinched a spot in the play-in rounds and are on the precipice of securing a spot as a top-six seed in the Eastern Conference, as well.

The success of the second half of the season is a far cry from the first part of the season for the Hawks where they eventually fired Coach Lloyd Pierce before the All-Star break.

Since taking over the job as interim head coach of the Hawks, Nate McMillan has a 20-9 record (including filling in a few games while Lloyd Pierce was out on paternity leave).

Despite the success of McMillan in pushing this year's team forward while dealing with a ton of injuries, the Hawks' front office has not held any discussions with Coach McMillan about removing the interim tag and naming him the Hawks' full-time head coach.

Atlanta Hawks GM Travis Schlenk explained that while those talks are coming, the plan has always been to hold them until AFTER the season, no matter what level of success McMillan had.

"When we made the decision at the beginning of March we said we'd sit down at the end of the season, didn't want it to be a distraction for him (McMillan). We want his full attention on the team, and he's good with that as well," says Schlenk. "It might be the longest job interview in the history of job interviews, been on the job for two-and-a-half months, but he's clearly doing a great job."
