The Atlanta Hawks have two major decisions to make this offseason. One being deciding who they’re going to draft with the No. 1 overall pick, and the other deciding if they’re going to trade Dejounte Murray and keep Trae Young, trade Young and keep Murray, trade them both, or keep them both in hopes their play on the court together will improve.
All rumors and reports indicate both guards returning to Atlanta next season is unlikely, so it really comes down to the Hawks deciding between building around Young or Murray. NBA Insider and content editor for Heavy.com Sean Deveney explained why he would rather build around Murray than Young.
“I would stick with [Dejounte] Murray," Deveney said. "I just think you know especially in the span that Trae was out I think you really saw what he can do, and he can defend. Trae [Young] is such a liability on the defensive end and that really has shown no sign of changing, so that’s always going to be something that’s going to hold you back a little bit.
"So I think yeah if you can move Trae, the contract is going to make it really tough, and there’s not a whole lot of teams out there that are clamoring for Trae Young."
Deveney goes on to explain why he thinks no teams are “clamoring for Trae Young”
“The reason being that you know you’ve got to build your whole offense around him," Deveney said. "You know he needs the ball, where as Dejounte Murray can, I think, be more of a part of a team. So I’d go with [Dejounte] Murray and let [Jalen] Johnson flourish a little bit and you know build those pieces around him.”
