As the NBA regular season end approaches, the Atlanta Hawks have spent the better part of the past few weeks battling to position themselves to make a playoff berth. At 39-37, the Hawks are currently sitting in the 10th spot of the Eastern Conference and have won their last games three games, which is just their fourth win streak of three or more games this season. So it is to no surprise that many Hawks’ fans are on the fence as to whether or not Atlanta has what it will take to win an NBA championship.
Well with Trae Young, one of the league’s top performing young stars, leading Atlanta with 28 points and 9.6 assist per game, former NBA All-Star, Tracy McGrady tells 92-9 The Game’s Andy and Randy of the Midday Show that Young can “absolutely” be a number one on a championship team. “If you look at what he did last year and what he’s doing this year, Trae Young’s a baller and I think he can be the starting point guard, the best player on a championship team,” McGrady would tell Andy and Randy of the two time All-Star.
As the conversation continued, McGrady did point out that Young would need “the right pieces around him” including players that have more of a defensive mindset, but with the right supporting cast, Young could “absolutely be the best player on a championship team”. And to McGrady’s point, the Hawks have relied heavily on Young’s production just to be in their current position as he has been the most consistent player for the Hawks in scoring this season.
When Young scores 30 or more points, the Hawks are 22-9, but when he scores less than 30 points, Atlanta is sub 500 at 14-25.
