With two straight wins under their belts, the Atlanta Hawks appear to be pulling all the strings to make something out of the 2022-23 NBA season and gain some moment down the final stretch. With 21 games remaining, the Hawks will be led by new head coach, Quin Snyder, as it was announced on Sunday, that the team and former Utah Jazz head coach had reached an agreement on a five-year contract and that Snyder would be on the sidelines Tuesday, when the Hawks host the Washington Wizards.
Snyder was formally introduced as the new head coach on Monday as he, and Atlanta general manager Landry Fields, answered questions from the members of the media. Later, Monday afternoon, Snyder was on with 92-9 The Game’s Dukes and Bell and told the afternoon duo that “relationships” played a role on what made the Hawks job attractive to him. He explained that when he was approached by Hawks assistant general manager Kyle Korver about his level of interest, he stated there “was a strong interest.”
Fast forward to Monday evening and Jon Chuckery spoke with Utah Jazz beat writer Andy Larsen who shared with Chuckery that one of the reasons things started to fall apart for Snyder and the Jazz was the fact that Snyder felt that he would not be able to have a “voice” when personnel decisions would be made when new team ownership and leadership took over.
“He will make his voice really heard and want to be a voice in the room on those decisions if he is coaching a team and I think it’s clear that he wants that voice and is getting that voice in Atlanta,” Larsen responded.
“Well, is he?” Chuckery later posed the question to listeners as he shared his thoughts on why there could more of a role in store for Snyder.
“You know one of the things that we heard that was going to happen was that he was going to be named President of Basketball Operations. Same title Mike Budenholzer had, same title Travis Schlenk had,” Chuckery continued.
And while there has been no formal announcement of any other role for Snyder at the time, Chuckery questions whether Snyder could assume additional responsibilities pending the outcome of the remainder of the season.
“Or depending on how this thing goes, is he going to have an influence on personnel decisions,” Chuckery asked.
