For a moment it looked like Atlanta United would do something they had never pulled off in club history. Win in Red Bulls Arena. Unfortunately that did not happen on Thursday night.
The match was closely contested and both clubs were left scoreless until the final 15 minutes of match time. United did score their first ever goal in Red Bull Arena when Josef Martínez was able to knock in Emerson Hyndman's blocked shot in the bottom right corner of the net during the 75th minute of the match.
The moment that changed the match came in the 81st minute when Red Bulls' Luquinhas drew a penalty on Caleb Wiley. That play seemed to light a fire in New York. Immediately after Lewis Morgan converted a penalty shot to tie the match.
From there on Atlanta United seemed to be rattled and would not gain their composure for the rest of the match. In the 89th minute Serge Ngoma scored another goal in favor of New York after taking advantage of a poor pass by Alex DeJohn.
Those two mistakes by Wiley and DeJohn, unfortunately, are what cost United their first ever win in Red Bulls Arena.
