The NFL’s new overtime rules for the playoffs have left many wondering what could have been with the Buffalo Bills’ Divisional Round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in January.
Well, Bills receiver Gabriel Davis has an idea of what would have happened.
In a video posted by the Bills, Davis is seen FaceTiming with teammate Isiah McKenzie when McKenzie informs him of the new rule that would allow both teams to possess the ball in overtim.
“Good, I would have had five touchdowns that game,” Davis said.
McKenzie responded that perhaps he would have had the game-winning score.
“Yeah, but that would have never been a good story,” Davis replied.
Davis, who just completed his second season in the NFL, was having the best game of his career against the Chiefs, finding the end zone four times already and totaling eight catches for 201 yards on the day.
But Davis and the rest of the Bills offense never got a chance to respond as the Chiefs’ scored the game-winning touchdown on their first possession of overtime.
The ending of the game prompted debate about the rules and was the impetus for the change that will begin next postseason.
Heck, under the new rules, Davis may have even had a shot at sixth touchdowns as his fifth would have only tied the game.
Now that would have been a good story.
