Could Cowboys trade for Patriots’ Isaiah Wynn to replace Tyron Smith?

New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn has had an interesting offseason. He opted out of voluntary workouts and got switched from left tackle to right tackle in training camp.

Wynn then missed some time with an undisclosed injury and while he has returned to take first-team reps, his future in New England is still up in the air. The 23rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft is in the final year of his rookie deal.

The Cowboys are one team that could use some help on the offensive line, particularly after eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith suffered a fractured knee in practice.

Chris Scheim and Nick "Fitzy" Stevens discussed Wynn's future in New England and the possibility of trading him to the Cowboys on Audacy's "6 Rings and Football Things" podcast.

“I think you could get a decent draft pick out of him. You could probably get a fourth or a fifth out of Isaiah Wynn at this point,” Scheim said (9:20 in player above). “He’s not horrendous. He was a first-round pick.”

“Pass-blocking was a little better last year,” Fitzy chimed in. “He’s a good run blocker, though.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones came out on Thursday and said that the team will go as running back Ezekiel Elliott goes. So it might make sense for them to trade for a run-blocking offensive tackle, especially after Tyron Smith’s injury.

“If you want to run the football, Isaiah Wynn is actually a pretty good target for you,” Scheim said. “You can get him relatively on the cheap, in terms of compensation, you just have to pay him the money.

“And then the Patriots walk away, they free their hands of a guy that clearly they may not necessarily believe is in their long-term future. They get a draft-pick out of it, which Belichick always wants to do, he wants that value. And you get it now instead of later in a compensatory pick, and that’s a risk because you don’t even know what kind of contract he’s gonna sign after his rookie deal,” he continued. “So I think in my head, trading him to Dallas for a fourth or fifth and you see that come this week before the season starts? I wouldn’t be shocked.”

“No, neither would I,” Fitzy replied. “It just seems like the perfect move. They’re frustrated. Time to end the frustration.”

But what might the Cowboys think about all of this?

Bobby Belt and Bryan Broaddus talked about potential replacements for Tyron Smith on Audacy’s “Love of the Star” podcast.

“I think we’ve pretty much established this is going to be an internal candidate,” Belt said (15:05 in player above), and Broaddus agreed, “at least initially.”

However, the duo specifically mentioned Wynn as someone to bring in to replace Smith.

“Didn’t they think he was a small tackle?” Broaddus said.

“That was a different coaching staff,’ Belt clarified. “I don’t know if that would matter to them as much. So Isaiah Wynn is somebody that they can consider.”

The guys also mentioned Eric Fisher and Jason Peters as veteran options in the free-agent market.

“Jason Peters is a guy that when I talk to my gang of seven, the general managers and directors of player personnel and stuff like that, they seem to think at 40 years old that Jason Peters has got some stuff still left in the tank,” Broaddus said. “Maybe what you do is you sign Jason Peters as an insurance policy to play behind Tyler Smith.”
