Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb eviscerated for ugly drop on MNF: ‘As bad a drop as you can have’

Given the opportunity to supplant trade casualty Amari Cooper as Dak Prescott’s go-to receiver, expectations couldn’t have been higher for CeeDee Lamb entering his third season in Dallas. Of course, that was before the Cowboys lost Prescott to a broken thumb, though he seems to be making good progress on that front. Regardless, Lamb, coming off a career year in 2021 (team-high 79 catches for 1,102 yards), has gotten off to an inauspicious start this season, laboring through a dismal Week 1 (two catches for 29 yards on 11 targets) before turning in a respectable 81-yard performance (75 yards receiving, six rushing) in last week’s upset of Cincinnati.

Lamb’s Jekyll and Hyde act continued Monday night in East Rutherford, where the 23-year-old lived every receiver’s worst nightmare, hanging Cooper Rush out to dry by dropping a wide-open deep bomb that had six points written all over it.

Had he managed to corral it, there’s a good chance Lamb would have taken it the distance, waltzing in for a 52-yard touchdown with 2:43 remaining in the first half. Instead, he let it fall through his fingertips, another missed opportunity for a shorthanded team (the Cowboys’ walking wounded includes Prescott, Michael Gallup and Dalton Schultz) that can’t afford to leave points on the table.

As you’d expect, the fantasy football community was apoplectic, taking to Twitter to voice their frustration with Lamb for his costly blunder. Fans were similarly perplexed by Lamb’s body language after the play, laughing off the miscue as casually as your clumsy neighbor who locked himself out of the family Subaru and now needs AAA to retrieve his keys from the front seat.

Lamb did redeem himself with a touchdown later on (his first since Week 10 of last season), though it’s the ball he didn’t haul in that had everyone on social media talking, wondering if the Oklahoma product is consistent enough to be a true No. 1 receiver.
