Robinson Canó will bat ninth and make his Atlanta Braves debut Monday evening against the New York Mets, the team he began the season with.
Beyond having begun his season in Queens, Canó -- now with his third organization in 2022 -- is still largely being paid by the Mets. In fact, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo pointed out that essentially the Mets are paying the eight-time All-Star to play against them this week:
Canó, 39, has slashed just .149/.182/.189 in 74 major league at-bats this season between the Mets and San Diego Padres. With that said, Canó was hitting .333 with three home runs and 20 RBIs for the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres' Triple-A affiliates. Alex Anthopoulos and the Braves are currently without Ozzie Albies, who fractured his left foot last month, so they took a chance on Canó.
Entering a three-game series Monday, the Mets lead the National League East by 1 1/2 games. The defending World Series Champion Braves are 52-35, and find themselves in control of the top Wild Card spot in the NL.
