For weeks, months even, it has been well-established that Willson Contreras likely will be traded this season.

And with the August 2nd MLB trade deadline nearing, a Contreras trade seems more likely than ever.

Contreras, the Chicago Cubs’ catcher since breaking into the big leagues in 2016, offers offensive potential at a position that generally lacks many impactful contributors with the bat. He’d be an upgrade at the position for many contenders, and the return the Cubs could get for him should be commensurate with that.

Appearing Monday on 670 The Score’s “Mully and Haugh”, Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman suggested what the Cubs potentially could get for Contreras.

"I think they should get one really good prospect or two pretty good prospects," Heyman said. "He’s one of the better guys who is going to be traded this trading season. He’s right up there with Josh Bell of the Nats and the pitchers."

Considering the Cubs seem to have little-to-no intention of re-signing Contreras, being able to land a higher-end prospect (or prospects) would be decent asset management.

Contreras on Sunday was named to his third-career All-Star Game. He’s hitting .266 with an .867 OPS and 13 home runs. The Rays, Giants and Guardians seem like the best potential landing spots for him, and a bidding war for his services would be good news for the Cubs.
