In the wake of Atlanta United goalkeeper, Brad Guzan getting injured in Saturday’s match against FC Cincinnati, United fans are faced with the fact that without the club’s two stars, the outlook for the team over the next few weeks are not promising as many wonder how Atlanta will handle replacing Guzan, who Ruptured his Achilles on Saturday and will miss the remainder of the season, as the injury comes at a time when the United are already without Josef Martinez, who is out over the next six to eight weeks following arthroscopic knee surgery.
On Monday, Jon Chuckery was joined by Felipe Cardenas, who covers Atlanta united for The Athletic, and Chuckery asked Cardenas whether or not he believes that Atlanta United should consider looking at life after Guzan. With Guzan’s contract due to end following next year and the severity of the 37 year old’s injury, Chuckery asked, “do you think that they start to use this year to start looking at a potential succession plan Guzan,” or should they just try to tough out the remainder of the season without him. Cardenas shared with Chuckery that United Technical Director, Carlos Bocanegra had previously spoke with him in 2019 about succession planning.
“He was like ‘we don’t ever be rebuilding, it’s succession planning’” Cardenas said of his conversation with Bocanegra, adding that whether or not the club has done so “successfully” is still unclear despite some of the young talent that they have brought in.
