Jim James experienced every bettor’s worst nightmare Wednesday, losing the last leg of an ambitious four-way parlay in heartbreaking fashion. Using the FanDuel Sportsbook app, James bet $100 that Jaylen Brown, Devin Booker, Rudy Gobert and Kristaps Porzingis would make the first basket of their respective games Wednesday night. Had it hit, that parlay would have paid out $76,320.
And it nearly did with Brown, Booker and Gobert each taking care of business. It all came down to Porzingis, who had a chance to sink the game’s first bucket, but bricked a layup that cost James a king’s ransom.
Why Porzingis, who stands 7’3,” didn’t just dunk it is a question that will have James tossing and turning at night for the rest of his earthly existence. James watched his fortune disappear when De’Aaron Fox scored on the following possession, adding another $100 to FanDuel’s bottom line. Every bettor has experienced some level of misfortune (like death, taxes and Tom Brady, the dreaded backdoor cover will come for all of us eventually), but James suffered a crueler fate than most, watching $76,000 go up in smoke because the league’s third-tallest player couldn’t make a shot from a foot away.
That is a mind-blowingly bad beat. If it’s any consolation to James, the Mavericks ended up losing by a single point to Sacramento with Porzingis’ blown layup costing Dallas dearly.
