As the Georgia Bulldogs begin moving forward with the loss of tight end Brock Bowers, all eyes are locked in to see which players will step up to have enough impact to fill the void left by the two-time All-SEC tight end. On Tuesday, The Steakhouse with Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden was joined by Mike Griffith of Dawg Nation, to discuss the Bulldogs’ season to this point and among other things, how the team will approach life without Bowers as they head into what is considered the toughest stretch of their season.
And while the loss of Bowers may have come at the most inopportune time for the Dawgs, two weeks ago they were gifted with the return of one of their biggest offensive weapons outside of Bowers, in Ladd McConkey. “Is it safe to say Ladd McConkey is receiver A, receiver one moving forward,” Shapiro asked Griffith during their conversation about the important of McConkey’s role for Georgia. McConkey, who had been sidelined with a back injury he suffered during fall camp, was second in receiving for Georgia last season and missed the first four games of this season but has tallied 107 yards receiving on nine receptions on limited snaps through three games.
In response to Shapiro’s question, Griffith told The Steakhouse that after seeing McConkey take a “car accident” in a game recently and walk off without any apparent setbacks and having spoken to sources close to the Dawgs’ camp, the wide receiver “is good”. Furthermore, Griffith made it clear to Shapiro and Golden that filling the shoes of Bowers is going to be nearly impossible for any one particular Georgia player, he gives high praise to McConkey and the production that he brings to the table for the Dawgs. “Powerful, fast explosive and great hands. I mean he’s an NFL receiver and he is Georgia’s best hope of competing for this third championship,” Griffith added.
