Recently, you may have seen an exchange of goods between veteran relief pitcher Joe Kelly and a mariachi performer he befriended at Dodger Stadium. Enamored with his jacket, Kelly offered his jersey in exchange, which the trumpet player happily accepted.
The story doesn’t end there. The Dodgers, who are in D.C. to play the Nationals this weekend, visited the White House this morning, where the reigning World Series champs were honored by President Joe Biden. While his teammates wore suits and ties, Kelly chose a different aesthetic, donning the same mariachi jacket he acquired earlier this week.
Kelly wasn’t the only Dodger to make a fashion statement Friday with Mookie Betts (who Kelly also won a World Series with in Boston) taking his hat game to the next level.
The Dodgers are the first team to visit the White House since the COVID pandemic began last March. Because he wasn’t on the team last year, Trevor Bauer, who will start Sunday’s series finale despite recent allegations of sexual assault, did not attend Friday’s ceremony commemorating the Dodgers’ 2020 World Championship.
