The Yankees have just lost another huge piece to the COVID IL.

Manager Aaron Boone revealed Monday night that RHP Gerrit Cole has tested positive for COVID-19, and will not make his start as scheduled on Tuesday. Boone did say no one else seems to be affected, and while he did not have an immediate answer as to who will make the start, the skipper said it will likely be Nestor Cortes.

In addition, third baseman Gio Urshela will be headed to the injured list, as an MRI taken Monday revealed a right hamstring strain that was “between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 strain.”

Urshela pinch-hit in Friday’s win over the Marlins but has not played since, so the Yankees can backdate his IL stint to Saturday, meaning he would be eligible to return on Tuesday, August 10.
