The Juan Soto sweepstakes are officially underway and early reports suggest that the Washington Nationals view NL East rival New York Mets as a potential fit for a trade partner.

According to SNY’s Andy Martino, citing industry sources, the Nationals view that Mets as one of only a few teams that could match up on a potential Soto trade and would begin by requesting two or three of the Mets’ best prospects, plus more.

This would mean Francisco Alvarez, Mark Vientos and Brett Baty as a starting point for Soto. Per Martino, it’s possible the Mets could swap Ronny Mauricio, a shortstop who is not as highly rated as the others, in place of Vientos or Baty.

Alvarez has created a whole lot of buzz this season. The 20-year-old catcher was recently ranked the No. 2 prospect in all over baseball, per MLB.com’s top 100 rankings. He slashed .277/.368/.553 with 18 home runs and 47 RBI in 67 games for Double-A Binghamton before being promoted to Triple-A over a week ago.

The Mets have previously had no intention of trading Alvarez, per Martino, but Soto, who has established himself as a star in the league at only 23, is fresh on the trade market after rejecting a 15-year, $440 million offer from the Nationals, who are now reportedly willing to listen to trade offers.

Meanwhile, the Yankees also figure to play into the Soto sweepstakes as well. Martino noted the equivalent asking price for the Bronx Bombeers would be their top prospects — Anthony Volpe (No. 8 overall), Oswald Peraza and Ken Waldichuck, plus more.
