Entire Florida, Mizzou teams assessed unsportsmanlike fouls for halftime brawl

Elton John once said (or, more accurately, sang) “Saturday night’s alright for fighting.” That was certainly the sentiment Saturday night in Gainesville with Mizzou and Florida coming to blows in an impromptu halftime melee. The brawl was a doozy, spurring three disqualifications with Mizzou and Florida each assessed team-wide unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, meaning any player who picks up a second personal foul will be subject to an automatic ejection.

Things got heated between the conference rivals when Florida quarterback Kyle Trask was drilled by Missouri edge rusher Travan Jeffcoat well after the ball had been thrown. Inexplicably, Jeffcoat wasn’t flagged on the play. The situation took a while to diffuse with officials struggling to separate the two teams. In total, three ejections were handed down with Mizzou’s Tre Williams, Florida’s Zachary Carter and Antwuan Powell (also of the Gators) all told to hit the showers.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, repercussions stem from Saturday’s clash, particularly for 10th-ranked Florida ahead of next week’s showdown with fellow SEC juggernaut Georgia. Despite the brief but eventful display of fisticuffs at midfield, this one hasn’t been much of a battle with Florida leading by a comfortable, 41-10 margin with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
