5 candidates to be next head coach of Falcons

By Tim Kelly, Audacy

After firing Dan Quinn following an 0-5 start, the Atlanta Falcons now have nearly three-quarters of the season to begin their search for Dan Quinn's full-time successor.

It's difficult to know whether the Falcons are an attractive job.

In many senses, how appealing the job is to potential candidates will depend upon who is ultimately hired as the organization's next general manager. General manager Thomas Dimitroff was fired with Quinn Sunday, so presumably the organization will hire his replacement before the next head coach. Perhaps the executive hired to lead the front office will come to the organization with a head coach in mind.

The next general manager - and by extension, the next head coach - will inherit Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. Both are franchise icons, but ones likely in the twilight of their careers, signed to massive contracts. Moving on from either would require taking on a significant amount of dead cap money, leaving the organization with next-to-no cap space for 2021. From that sense, this job may not be as attractive as other openings.

At the same time, at 0-5, the Falcons are very. much in the race for Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Even if it required a pretty lean year or two in terms of the cap to move on from Ryan, the chance to be paired with Lawrence would be extremely intriguing to any potential coaching candidate.

With some of the pros and cons acknowledged, here are five candidates to be the team's head coach in 2021, with Raheem Morris set to serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season:

Eric Bieniemy - Offensive Coordinator, Kansas City Chiefs

Bieniemy's case is pretty cut and dry at this point. The 51-year-old has been on Andy Reid's staff since 2013, and took over as the offensive coordinator before the 2018 season, Patrick Mahomes' first season as the starting quarterback. The former NFL running back probably should have been hired as a head coach last offseason, and almost certainly will this time around. Whether the Falcons are his best option or not probably depends on where they are picking in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Joe Brady

Joe Brady - Offensive Coordinator, Carolina Panthers

In a perfect world, Brady would probably spend another year or two as an offensive coordinator before getting an NFL head coaching job, but it may not take that long for someone to give the 31-year-old an opportunity. Brady was an offensive assistant on Sean Payton's staff in 2017 and 2018, before taking over as the offensive coordinator of LSU in 2019. All he did there was preside over one of the greatest offenses in NCAA history and help to turn Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson and Clyde Edwards-Helaire into first-round picks. Matt Rhule brought Brady along with him to become the offensive coordinator this year in Carolina, and while some thought the Panthers had a chance to be the worst team in the NFL, they're 3-2, with Christian McCaffrey having missed each of the last three games. It seems like a matter of when, not if, Brady is leading a franchise.

Dabo Swinney

Dabo Swinney - Head Coach, Clemson

There's no evidence that Swinney is interested in leaving Clemson - or that NFL teams view him as someone capable of making the jump - but he's naturally going to be connected to any place that could land Trevor Lawrence. If there is an offseason for Swinney to consider his future, this would seemingly be it, with Lawrence set to leave for the NFL, and the Houston Texans job open with his former college quarterback Deshaun Watson under contract.

Brian Daboll

Brian Daboll - Offensive Coordinator, Buffalo Bills

Daboll has been the Bills' offensive coordinator since 2018, Josh Allen's rookie season. The growth that Allen has shown under Daboll's tutelage - and the ability of Daboll to open the offense up in his third season - will make him a trendy coaching candidate this offseason. Whether it's in 2021 or shortly thereafter, the next coach of the Falcons will almost certainly be tasked with developing a young quarterback. Daboll has shown himself to be strong in that department, which would make him an ideal fit for this position.

Josh McDaniels

Josh McDaniels

Not that he needed it, but McDaniels' resume for a second shot at head coaching is perhaps even stronger now that he's helped to revive Cam Newton's career. If the Falcons land the No. 1 pick, the idea of a McDaniels-Nick Caserio regime in Atlanta could be pretty interesting. It seems unlikely McDaniels would come to Atlanta to coach Ryan, but if he's intrigued by Lawrence, Justin Fields or Trey Lance, the Falcons could make sense as a landing spot.
