The Rams pulled off a rare pre-Super Bowl blockbuster last week by acquiring Matthew Stafford from the Lions in exchange for Jared Goff and three draft picks (two first-rounders and a third) in a swap of former first overall picks. With Stafford in tow, many are already pegging the Rams as NFC favorites, though Los Angeles wasn’t the only team that coveted the one-time Pro Bowler.

According to longtime radio host Dan Patrick, the Broncos were very involved in talks for Stafford, reportedly offering the Lions Drew Lock and the ninth overall pick in April’s draft. Patrick shared his scoop Thursday on The Dan Patrick Show, which airs weekdays on NBC’s Peacock streaming service.

The Lions rejected that proposal in hopes of receiving a better offer elsewhere, which eventually materialized when the Rams threw the kitchen sink at Detroit Saturday night.

Though the Broncos obviously came up empty in their pursuit of Stafford, Denver’s interest in the veteran quarterback is still notable. Disgruntled Texans star Deshaun Watson is said to be intrigued by the Broncos—at least according to former teammate, Kareem Jackson—and that interest could be mutual, particularly with the revelation Denver is actively shopping Lock. Drafted with the 49th pick in 2019, Lock struggled mightily in 2020, tying for the league-lead in interceptions with 15. His anemic 57.3 completion percentage was also an NFL-worst.

Hard as it is to say goodbye to a Motor City icon—Stafford is the franchise’s all-time leader in virtually every passing stat—Detroit fans are probably thankful the Rams swooped in with a godfather offer, showering the rebuilding Lions with a bevy of future draft picks. Goff is no slouch either, garnering two Pro Bowl appearances in his five-year stint with Los Angeles. Feeling unappreciated by the Rams’ coaching staff, Goff has said he’s excited for a fresh start in Detroit.
