Matt Schaub, who saw the field just once for Atlanta this past season, is hanging ‘em up. The veteran signal-caller announced his NFL retirement Monday, following a 17-year playing career with the Falcons, Texans, Raiders and Ravens. Schaub found his most success in Houston, leading the league in passing yards during his breakout 2009 campaign.

A West Chester, Pennsylvania native who played collegiately at Virginia before debuting in 2004, Schaub earned two Pro Bowl nods over a career that spanned 155 games including 93 starts. Schaub remains the Texans’ franchise leader in passing yards (23,221), touchdowns (124) and completions (1,951). The 39-year-old led Houston to consecutive division titles in 2011 and 2012, serving as catalyst for a loaded offense featuring Arian Foster and Andre Johnson, among other weapons. The former Falcons’ third-rounder returned to his old Atlanta stomping grounds in 2016, serving as a backup/veteran sounding board for franchise quarterback Matt Ryan up until Monday’s retirement.

Schaub ranks 22nd in all-time quarterback rating (89.5), though he’s also tied for 31st with 14 pick-sixes. The 6’6” gunslinger is arguably best known for his 527-yard outburst versus Jacksonville in 2012, the second-highest yardage total in league history. Schaub logged 43 completions that day, the fourth-most ever in a single game. His career resume also includes a 497-yard explosion in 2010 and a similar 460-yard blowup in 2019.
