Will Fuller was enjoying a career-best season for the Texans in 2020 … until the NFL popped him for PEDs. Fuller, who still has one game remaining on his suspension, addressed the situation during his Dolphins introduction earlier this week, insisting last year’s failed drug test was “completely accidental” and a “one-time thing.”
“I wanted to take a one-year [deal] just to prove my worth in the league,” Fuller told ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe. “I just want to prove to the NFL, to the Dolphins for taking a chance on me, that I'm a player that they would love to have long term."
While Fuller apologized for letting down Texans fans when his six-game suspension was announced last fall, the 26-year-old essentially pinned the blame on his doctor for prescribing an unauthorized substance. “Earlier this year I sought treatment from a medical professional who prescribed medication that he believed to be permitted under the NFL’s drug policy,” Fuller detailed in a lengthy Instagram post. “As it turns out, my trust in this professional was misplaced.”
Whether you believe that explanation or not (surely there are plenty of skeptics who would scoff at the notion Fuller wasn’t privy to what he was putting in his body), the sixth-year receiver will have an opportunity to change the narrative in 2021. A born playmaker with blinding 4.3 wheels, Fuller has never lacked for talent, though persistent durability concerns were likely a factor in his relatively tepid free-agent market.
Fuller also gave embattled quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a vote of confidence, calling his new teammate an “electric player.” Drafted 21st overall in 2016, the Notre Dame alum should greatly improve what was one of the league’s weaker receiving units last year (12th-fewest receiving yards per game).
