The talk of the 2022 MLB Draft was on the number of kids of former big league players who will get drafted along with the third overall selection Kumar Rocker.
After originally getting drafted by the New York Mets in the 2021 Draft, the club decided against signing the young ace due to medical concerns after a physical. Following a stint with the Tri-City Valleycats of the independent Frontier League, Rocker re-declared for this year's draft -- ultimately getting selected by the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers taking Rocker certainly surprised many in the MLB world -- as well as superstar QB for the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes who congratulated the 22-year-old on Twitter.
Mahomes of course is no stranger to the sport of baseball. His dad, Pat Sr., was a former big league pitcher for over a decade. Naturally his son followed in his footsteps.
Mahomes played baseball in high school and was regarded as a top prospect in 2014 but slipped to the 37th round, getting taken by the Detroit Tigers. Instead of grinding it out in the minors, he instead accepted a football scholarship at Texas Tech.
I think it's safe to say Mahomes made the right choice.
Rocker will be reunited with former Vanderbilt teammate Jack Leiter who was drafted by the Rangers in 2021. When asked about rejoining his former teammate, Rocker says he couldn't be more excited.
“That’s the boy right there,” he told MLB Network when asked about Leiter. “I’m excited to see Jackie soon.”
