One of the teams that I will be watching out for this year will be the South Atlanta Hornets. Last season the Hornets dodged COVID while starting 1-3 before scoring an upset win over Pace Aaceemy and reeling off 6 consecutive victories to finsh at 7-4. In the process South Atlanta won the school's first ever region title while advancing to the second round of the state playoffs.
This fall the school better known as a basketball powerhouse needs to show that last season was no fluke. Head Coach Brad Stephens has moved on to Chapel Hill High School in Douglas County.
Enter Michael Woolridge who left Columbus' Hardaway after leading the Golden Hawks to 3 straight playoff seasons.
Woolridge is a Hardaway graduate, but saw the potential for great things at South Atlanta.
"South Atlanta was coming off a region title," says Woolridge. " They had one of the best players in the state in running back Keyjuan Brown. I saw the work these guys put in up here with coach Stephens , who had done a great job with the program . My goal is getting the numbers up in the weight room, because the talent is here.
This is probably the most talented group that I have ever coached."
After dropping their season opener, The Hornets have this week off before heading to Bleckley County on September 3.
