We're over halfway through the college football season, and many things have gone according to plan - look no further than the dominant Georgia defense or Alabama offense. On the other hand, many have not - Spencer Rattler and Clemson, oh my.
The Heisman race falls right in line with this sentiment. We have our expected people in Bryce Young or Matt Corral that find themselves in the thick of it while others like Spencer Rattler and DJ Uiagalelei have found themselves on the sideline instead of New York. While the aforementioned have been a surprise, nothing quite compares to the shock that many are experiencing when they see the name Kenny Pickett appear on the shortlists.
Make no mistake. Kenny Pickett has been one of the best players in the country in 2021. He has led the Pittsburgh Panthers to a 6-1 record to lead the ACC Coastal. He has lit up the stat sheet to the tune of 2,236 yards, 23 touchdowns, and a single interception while completing 68.9% of his passes. For context, those numbers are nearly identical to fellow contender Bryce Young.
"Picket... I don't think there are two guys ahead of him in the Heisman race. He's averaging 360 per game and doesn't turn the ball over," says Jon Chuckery.
Well what about a defensive guy like Jordan Davis?
While he may actually be the best player in college football, unfortunately, it doesn't appear at all likely that he'll even get an invite to the ceremony in December. The Heisman Trophy, fair or not, has trended heavily towards being not only an offensive player's award, but a quarterback award. Jordan Davis is dominant, but he just doesn't play the right position.
