The transfer portal has been a hot button topic to many in the college football world. Many critics have compared it to free agency and claim it's bad for the sport. However many coaches have used it to quickly get their team's in position to succeed. Among those is head coach Shaun Elliott at Georgia State. The portal has proven to be a valuable tool for the Georgia State program, if used the right way.

Among those success stories for the Georgia State program are defensive back Jamyst Williams, a former four star recruit that transferred from South Carolina a year ago. "He (WIlliams) was awesome," Elliott told Sam & Greg, "He came in and set a standard in our backfield."
Williams is a perfect example of how successful the portal can be. Originally slotted as a defensive back by the Gamecocks, he was able to transfer and utilize his talents on the other side of the ball as a tailback. As a senior he finished second on the team in rushing and as an All Sun Belt Honorable Mention.
Elliott is going back to the well again this season by adding quarterback Keilon Brown from Memphis to "add a little bit of competition to that quarterback room which is always good."
The 6'0, 184 lb. quarterback is a dual threat guy with tremendous athleticism and - most importantly - all four years of eligibility left. Brown was a three star recruit that will hope to make an impact like that of Jamyst Williams.
"The transfer portal can be good, if it is managed the right way," he told us. "We use it to the best of our ability to make it not only benefit us as a football team but those guys as individuals also."
